"My Bags Are Packed."In my 2nd of a series of posts showing how much the world of business can learn from the world of athletics, I share with you a video of one of the most energetic and engaging (and really funny) personalities that ever lived - the late great Jim Valvano.For those of you who are not American college basketball fans, he coached North Carolina State to a National Championship in 1983. The circ*mstances of this accomplishment are almost beyond belief.After a half decent but not amazing regular season, Valvano knew he would likely have to win his team's conference tournament to have a chance of making what is now known as "March Madness" - the big tournament that has millions of people who don't even watch basketball fill out brackets every year.That meant winning three straight elimination games, with two of them against top ten programs in the country - North Carolina (with Michael Jordan) in the semi-final, and Virginia (with Ralph Sampson) in the final. The odds were not in their favour...but they found a way to win 3 very close games and made it into the March Madness field as a 6th seed.The March Madness is an elimination format tournament - each game you play, if you win it, you "survive and advance" (There's an ESPN 30 for 30 episode titled Survive And Advance - highly recommended viewing). They went on to win the National Championship by winning all 6 of their games, most of them were dramatic comebacks when they were trailing with less than a minute to play.His lesson for the business world is not to try and be as enthusiastic as he is (as I think that is setting the bar far too high for the overwhelming majority of us), but he conveys, so powerfully, what can happen when someone tells somebody they believe in them. It's inspiring.And in an interesting twist of fate, the 2024 March Madness tournament is down to the Final Four - and one of the teams still alive, is no other than North Carolina State - who just like 41 years ago - needed to win their conference tournament just to get into March Madness...could history repeat itself?https://lnkd.in/g3jp4txm
