'Tragic incident': American teen dies in skiing collision at Banff Sunshine Village Back to video

The teen was skiing down a steep pitch on a black diamond run on Goat’s Eye when he collided with a wooden signpost, said Kendra Scurfield, spokeswoman for Sunshine Village, which is about 140 kilometres west of Calgary.

“We’re investigating the incident and at this point it appears to have been a high-speed collision,” said Scurfield.

“It was a beautiful sunny day and there were good conditions.”

The teen was transported to the base of the mountain by emergency and ski patrol personnel where they were met by STARS Air Ambulance.

But he was pronounced dead there and not transported by helicopter, said Scurfield and a STARS spokesman.

“Our condolences are obviously with the family, it’s a tragic incident and we are saddened,” said Scurfield, adding the 15-year-old was wearing a helmet at the time.

The fatality occurred just before the busy Family Day long weekend.

Scurfield said the teen was from the eastern U.S. and wasn’t with his family but was accompanied by a guardian.

She didn’t specifically say if there would be any changes made or if any were needed at the site of the collision.

“We’re always looking for ways to make our runs safer, it should be a safe place for all to enjoy,” said Scurfield.

“It is a safe activity.”

It’s the first fatal ski or snowboarding accident at Sunshine Village in nearly a decade, she added.

In March 2015, a snowboarder in his 20s died after colliding with a tree near Sunshine’s Wolverine chairlift.

Another snowboarder was airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre after falling and hitting his head on the resort’s Assiniboine Trail in January 2022.
